"Leaving Le Mont"

"Leaving Le Mont"

The history of Mont St. Michel is a fascinating read. A rocky tidal island, with a monastery and fortifications initially built in 800 AD. Access is particularly difficult with rapid variable tides (50ft between low and high marks), as well as the notorious quicksand. It is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, which commemorates the 1066 Norman conquest of England.

It is an important symbol of French national identity as during the Hundred Year war, although the English took all of Normandy, they never successfully conquered this island.

Mont Saint-Michel was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
